Redesign

Redesign is a practice of preservation and passing certain functional features of the original design and its adaptation to new conditions. When analysing and collecting information from designers’ case studies and graphic design websites devoted to logo redesign, I noticed some chaos in the usage of the term. Terms such as Facelift, Rebrand, Refresh, Restart, Tuning, Renewal, Update, Revision, Reduction, Reform are used to name certain techniques, but their definition is never clear. The meaning of “redesign” as a concept is thus significantly expanded. The aim of my book is to offer an order in this issue. Based on my own comparison, I have set out 7 ways to think about redesign: Refresh, Revision, Restart, Retouch, Revival, Receive and Hack. For each category, I gathered key information and looking for similarities, I set rules for them. The book focuses on methods of redesign, the processes that are used in the process of change; the reasons why some logos are adjusted to a minimum, others are gradually being reduced and further updated or changed completely. The work also includes interviews with designers and an extensive history of logo design.
